Kirk West, of course.

I’ve had so many thoughts about Butch in the past couple of weeks and one thing I keep coming back to is how good Les Brers was and how few people got to see that and really understand that. It was as close as there’s been to an Allman Brothers show since October, 2014 and it was, of course, a special treat to hear Jaimoe, Butch and Marc play together again. Those of us who got to really dig into this were very lucky.

In October, I saw two shows, one near me in Montclair NJ and the next one at Philadelphia’s Fillmore. I rode the bus down there with the band and had a fantastic time BS’ing with Jaimore, Jack Pearson, Lamar Williams Jr and Oteil in the back lounge.

The show was fantastic. Packed house, with over 1,000 people there at a free show celebrating the one-year anniversary of the Fillmore. Great performance, which I mostly watched from the stage and streamed live to thousands… Afterwards, a rush of people at the merch stand… everyone signing autographs and taking pictures with the fans. It was a great, great vibe all the way around.

Back on the bus, we stopped at a great cheesesteak place down the street, loaded up, climbed back on, gorged on great Philly cheesesteaks and began the ride back home. Back to the hotel around 330, and staggered home to my bed at 4 am. A great, great night. I never thought it would be the last time I saw the band.

Now someone has posted a pro video (not pro sound alas) of the first set. I’m so happy to have this. Enjoy… and at the end Butch comes out and talks and is so so Butch. Makes it extra special.

Alan, thank you for this. My son, who is 15 and a drummer, and I went to see Les Brers in Rutland, VT last September. We had seen the Allman Brothers as well in the past and it was truly the first time we realized that it wasn’t the guitar players that made the band, as much as it was Butch and Jaimoe. They are irreplaceable and no matter who else plays in the band, it is those two men that make the train run and that dragon breathe fire. It will never be close again. We are blessed to have witnessed while we could. Let it be a lesson to all. Live while you can. See and do what you want to when the opportunity arises. Never say that you’ll do it next time because there may not be another next time. Long live the Allman Brothers in our hearts.

You’re welcome Matt, and I totally agree. The only thing I regret in life are things I didn’t do. almost nothing I actually did!

Alan, it appears from your use of past tense throughout this piece that with Butch gone there is no more Les Brers. Do we know this to be the case? I’ve been sort of holding out hope that the vision that Bobby expressed for Dead & Company might play out with Les Brers as well, that it’s not so much about the particular individuals in the band as much as the band that inspired it all created so many monumentally talented musicians that there can and will always be a Les Brers, as long as there are fans who want them to play.

I guess a more succinct way to ask my question is who is going to standing on the Mushroom stage at midnight on April 21, 2017?

Fair points. No, I do NOT know that the band will be no more It was, however, Butch’s baby… remember it began as “Butch Trucks and Friends” and he spontaneously renamed it after a great Peach Fest set in 2015.

As for April 21, I don’t know truly but I would guess there’s a pretty decent chance these guys are standing on that stage at midnight, though I have no idea who’s in the center seat… People have suggested Duane Trucks, which makes sense, but I do believe Panic is in Atlanta that night. I guess we all have to stay tuned!

Thanks for sharing this video. Although it’s not pro sound it doesn’t sound that bad. Curious, did Les Brer use the world famous ABB road crew?
